Cadence Black, Cady to all her family and friends, turned back once more to stare at the castle that had been her temporary home for the past two months. She was grateful for everything that King Joscelin and Queen Danielle had done for her and now she was starting a new chapter of her life. Queen Danielle had been her closest friend that she had ever had in her life, yet she was leaving her dear friend for a new adventure. Cady had met the man that she was slowly falling in love with, the Lord of Avonderre, Laeghton Mercer, a few days ago. He required her help and attention and she his. They had spent most of the day spending time together in his castle and with the approval of Dani she was now heading towards Avonderre to help heal her Laeghton as best as she could. He had confessed that he could fall in love with her as well and he had written to her that his sister had been found in Solraya and that one day he wanted them to meet one another. She had been so excited for him and was wondering if they could meet each other and have a good conversation. She had informed Laeghton that she would be arriving soon after the Queen had approved of her leaving knowing that Cady couldn't leave Laeghton by himself even if Wren Rae was back in his life. She sighed and headed into the carriage that would take her to Laeghton's castle in Avonderre. She would miss Dani's company and their afternoon tea time together, but promised that she would come visit her every now and then. She had also promised to send word with any new information that Charles had sent her straight to King Joscelin at any moment as well. She watched the clouds roll around on the clear, sunny day as she descended towards Avonderre and she slowly felt tired and before she knew it, her eyes were dropping and she fell asleep peacefully. *** "Lady Black, you have arrived at Lord Mercer's castle." The driver told her softly shaking her shoulders a bit and she immediately opened her eyes and yawned stretching her arms out a bit. "Thank you Malcolm I do apologize for my rudeness." She said softly as she slowly took his hand and he helped her down from the carriage and she grabbed her bag full of clothes and things she needed to help Laeghton substain himself from alcohol. It wouldn't be easy, but she knew she could do it. She gave Malcolm some coins and easily made her way to the door where the butler was waiting for her. "I'm Lady Cadence Black, Lord Mercer is expecting me." She announced herself as he nodded and let her inside while closing the door and told a servant who went upstairs to find Laeghton. She slowly placed her bag down and glanced around the beautiful foyer admiring the paintings and art around the room. She yawned once more and glanced around not noticing that she was not alone in the room anymore.

Lord Laeghton Mercer woke up from a late nap in his chamber, with--for once--no brandy on his breath and no bottle beside his bed. Since Wren Rae had returned a week ago, he'd been completely sober and not suffering from any serious withdrawal symptoms, at least that he could tell. She wasn't warmed up to him yet, and he had her permanently in her solar for awhile to study her bible, read his letters, and think about things. She wanted to be alone, and Laeghton agreed that it might be best that way.
He didn't want Cady and Wren Rae to meet until they were all stable housemates, so that no falling out would come about between them. He would welcome Cady back and spend separate time with both women while here. After all, he never had a lot to do around Avonderre, seeing as the town easily took care of itself, and the castle was empty. He had all of four servants here now, after sending most of them out with his past wife. He hated her and what she'd been to him, and this lonely castle had been his residence for the past five years, with no one to keep him any company but his own mind and whatever random visitors called from time to time.
This life had been nothing but dull since Wrennie had left. But now she was back, and the sweet darling Cady was in his life too. Things were, for once, beginning to look up for Lord Avonderre himself. What a world. Perhaps God had not forsaken him after all.
One of the manservants came to fetch Laeghton to report that he had a visitor. Laeghton laughed softly and told him that this visitor was relatively permanent, as far as he knew. Secretly, Laeghton wanted to fall in love with this young sweetheart. He wanted to raise her up to be his own Lady Avonderre--not the princess that she really was--and marry her. She was the most compassionate thing he'd known, besides his sister. She was going to be his.
Laeghton made his way to the hall, where he found Cady waiting for him, glancing around. At least the castle was still well-kept. He stopped for a minute, and just watched her, his eye beholding a beauty he soon hoped to hold in his own. When he realized that perhaps he ought not stare at her, Laeghton said softly, "Welcome to Castle Avonderre, my sweet lovely Lady Cady." He grabbed her small frame around the waist and kissed her cheek. Soon, he let go and frowned. He was being too quick with all this. "My apologies. I'm too touchy." He tried another soft smile.

Cady did not realize that she was staring at one of the paintings in the corner of the foyer. It was of a landscape piece, it looked like it was a soft paint, like a newer kind called watercolor. Her mother had loved it so much that she remember that she had commissioned a few paintings as such. She slowly walked over to it and traced the golden frame that curled into a spiral shape at the end and could not believe that she was where she was still.
She would never have imagined that when she had arrived here months ago that she would end up living in two of the biggest and beautiful castles in the land, Solraya's and now Avonderre's. She would stay for as long as Laeghton desired her for, but if she was truly being honest with herself, she never wanted to leave. She wanted to be there for him, she wanted to be his wife and lady forever like he wanted her to be. She never knew what love could be like, but she wanted to feel it. There were days that all she could do was think of Laeghton and his smile. And nothing else. She knew that since his sister was back in his life that he did not require as much assistance as before, however, he still requested her presence at his castle. His home that he told her that he wanted to make it possibly her own home one day. How wonderful life would be for her if she really did find love with the older, kind, loving, yet lonely man. Then they would not be lonely anymore. She confessed that she had been lonely for the majority of her time here. Love was everywhere in all shapes and forms around her and here was the runaway Tyrian princess feeling like an outsider. Cady could not even reveal her true self to anyone, she did not want to be a princess anymore. She wanted to be happy and she was only happy when she was around Laeghton or thinking about it. He was not perfect, nowhere close, yet she did not mind that.
Straightening out her black and red dress, she turned around suddenly when she heard a noise coming from the other side of the room. She turned around swiftly gasping a bit feeling a bit embarrassed at someone catching her staring simply at a watercolor, landscape painting. She felt herself relaxing immediately at the man she had just been thinking of giving him a bright smile as he wrapped his arms around her tightly and kissed her cheek greeting her with a smile and then an apology.
Cady immediately frowned and wrapped her arms around his neck leaning up to kiss him very gently on the lips, "Never apologize for being touchy, I rather enjoy you touching me. Thank you for inviting me to stay my dear Laeghton, please forgive me, but I have missed your company...very much. I am grateful for you for letting me stay here. I am at your service for as long as you need me to stay and I shall leave whenever you dismiss me." She spoke to him softly reaching up to stroke his cheek very gently not wanting to hurt him.

Sometimes Laeghton had spent days locked up in his library with but a bottle and the books all about him. He did much; he wrote letters to his sister and copied down quotes from the great philosophers; he read escapades and mulled over quips from recent poets. That was his release, and all that he had. Land, it was worthless, when the availability of it was so vast. But knowledge--that was worth something. Worth its weight and then some in gold.
It was the power that Laeghton had, above all his peers. He knew things. But those things were only practical when they could be discussed and debated, tossed about and turned over; and that was something Laeghton could only do in the presence of an equal--an equal like his sister.
He was glad, though, to have now his sister and the woman he was courting (as it wasn't necessarily an official ordeal as of yet) in his house, to keep the hours passing and the tea warm and the conversation healthy. The house hadn't been this full in years, it seemed like, even when his three brothers and their wives joined him for Christmas or Lent. Two spirited women were here now and he felt, once more, content and young. That was how it should have been, for Laeghton wasn't old enough to call himself such yet. While Wren Rae wasn't quite ready to be presented to the social scene again, Cadence was a belle and a blessing of a caretaker.
And she was glad to see him, it looked like! He smiled; he couldn't help the turning up of his lips. What a warm embrace he was met with; what a sweet sight. "But as to the rules of chivalry and what is right, I must apologize. This is my house; I should strive to contain it." He grinned and sighed. It was good that his castle finally felt like home, but even better that his heart was working on fixing itself, just like Wren Rae's. "And who said I dare ever dismiss you, Lady Cady?"
He turned to face her more seriously, then, deciding to let her know what else was want to go on about this house. She should know, after all. "Wren Rae's back, and she's here now. But I beg of you, don't go looking for her. I'll have her out when she can manage it." He smiled smally.

From the moment she had walked through the door of Avonderre Castle, Cady had felt welcomed. Like it could possibly be welcoming her to her future home. She did not wish to hold her breath regarding that situation. It would be a long time before she would marry the man who was staring at her smiling at her sweetly. She had immediately glanced over at her large bag full of her necessities wondering how long she was going to be staying. Queen Danielle had dismissed her from her services, but had invited her to weekly visits so the two ladies and friends could spend time with one another and escape their duties. Dani's of being Queen and Cady's of being a humble and kind servant to anyone who needed her and right now, she and Laeghton needed one another.
She turned her attention to a maid whom had grabbed her bag and took it upstairs somewhere, "Thank you." She said with a grateful smile towards the maid before turning back towards the man she was falling in love with, with a slight blush upon her pale cheeks and nodded in agreement with him. Affections were only for married couples, and she was not married.
"You are correct of course, I will follow and maintain that rule. Is there any other rules I need to follow as well?" She asked with a slight smirk teasing him a bit and then shrugged her shoulder at his question, "I do not know, you can dismiss me if I become too bold or out-spoken. Or anytime you wish although if I am being honest, I do not want to be dismissed anytime soon." She replied with a slight smile.
Carefully listening to him about his sister being back, her eyebrow raised a bit at him asking her to respect Wren Rae and her privacy, which she would, of course, but could not help, but be curious. "If that is what you wish for, then I shall not disturb her or look for her. What should I do if she finds me first? I don't really know what to say if she asked why I was here...and other things." She muttered the last part, but giving him her word that she would respect his wishes. She remembered him saying that Wren Rae was back and she was so thrilled for him.

The past week had been a miracle for Laeghton, as far as he was concerned. What with Wren Rae back and Cadence come to watch over him, tides were certainly turning--and it was for the better this time. Wren Rae, despite that she wouldn't be herself for a long time, if ever, was his most favoured woman, and his absolute best friend. She was here, and that was what mattered. And now, Cadence! His darling, his confidante, his caretaker! Two women that meant the world to him were here now and he was beginning to feel complete again, like a real, strong, young man.
Things were looking up, that was for sure. And now to see the smiling face of Cady before him--the woman that he adored for her manners, her character, her compassion. He smiled to himself at the prospect of marriage, but he wouldn't dare tell her yet. Love it may be, but Laeghton was also much older than her and he knew how soon it was. At least she was here, in his house, and he could justify his feelings in the time she spent with him.
He grinned at her and took one of her hands in both of his. Rubbing it absentmindedly, he replied, "On second thought, this is my house. I command my own rules. I'll be chivalrous as I see fit," He leaned down and kissed her on her lips, not caring who saw and not caring what was proper. The feeling of exuberance was overwhelming and Laeghton could not help himself. In spite of himself, he couldn't help but think that he wanted her for his own, mind and body. He loved Cady more and more as he was around her, and now that his mind was free of the burden of losing Wren Rae, he felt ten years younger than he was. Like a bachelor. Like a suitor. Like a man.
He raised an eyebrow. "So does that mean you'll do what I ask of you?" He laughed and then continued, drawing on her later comment and filling her in on Wren Rae's current state of affairs. "I doubt she'll ever come out of her rooms, at least not until she's reconciled with herself. But she's a strong girl. She'll get through it--I just have to have my time with her." It was all true. Wrennie was strong and he had no doubt that she would recover in time. The problem now was only that she didn't believe in herself, and that she had past troubles that would take a long time to resolve.

If she was being completely honest with herself, Cady would admit that she was still a bit shocked that she was currently in her beloved's castle staying with what she had hoped to be permanently with him in her arms in the privacy of his home. Never in her wildest dreams would she had ever thought that she would have ever met a wonderful, sweet man like Laeghton was and that he would have ever accepted her help. She didn't necessarily look at it as taking care of him as an obligation, but it could be determined as that from anyone else's point of view who did not understand what their circumstances were. She wanted to help him although since his sister had arrived, that he did not quite need her help from recovering from years of alcohol use and abuse like he had once before. Yet she would not leace unless he had dismissed her from his house, however, from the affections he had shown her earlier, she had a feeling he wouldn't be dismissing her anytime soon which she loved.
Cady turned her attention back towards the man in front of her grinning once more before slowly wrapping her arms around his neck rubbing the back of his neck gently. She smiled gently resting her head against his chest gently before he grabbed her hand in his as he leaned down and kissed her after his announcement. She smiled against his lips and kissed him back softly closing her eyes and squeezing his hands before pulling away slowly.
"You are indeed the master of this castle, you shall command what you wish for my dear. However you are chivalrous in your way that can be both private and for the public eye. In other words you're a gentleman." She told him gently before giving him one more soft kiss playing with the back of his neck once more teasing him a bit.
She grinned and slowly nodded her head, "Yes I will do what you ask of regarding your lovely sister. Reconciled with herself? Poor dear she must have got through some rough times during her time away. I hope that she will reconcile with herself in time so you two can spend time with one another once again. You're a good man for taking her in, not most men would." She told him sweetly rubbing his cheek once more not caring who saw.

With Wren Rae and Cadence now residing in his castle with him, Laeghton could not be happier. He had now everything he thought he could need--of course, as it always seemed to be, he was sure the euphoria would settle and he'd get back, finally, to managing his small kingdom of Avonderre, and solving problems he should have solved five years ago, and counting.
And Cady was going to be good for him. He had lied, only a little bit, about his drinking. He wasn't completely sober yet, and that was why he wasn't suffering the symptoms of withdrawal. He took a dash in his tea in the mornings. A sip at lunch. A drink at dinner. Not much. Just enough to keep his need suppressed and out of the array of problems he had--speaking of which, the problems were lessening with every guest that walked through his castle door. He looked over thoughtfully at Cady, whose eyes were so full of compassion for her fellow humans, so full of youthful exuberance. He wanted to capture that jovial spirit for himself.
Ah, and she kissed him. She was here right next to him now, and he hoped for a second that she would never leave him. He liked her right here. "Mm. Chivalrous. When I want to be. Tell me, Cady, do you like scandals?" he asked sweetly enough, reserving his true feelings for later, after she had time to settle in at the castle and perhaps get to know his sister. Little did Cady know, but she woud be the caretaker of both of the Mercers living here. Not just Laeghton.
He shot her a confused glance. Why would he not take her? He'd never known anything but compassion toward his sister; how could he up and turn her away? No, Cady didn't quite understand. But that was alright. She'd get it once she saw Laeghton and Wren Rae together. "You'll see. You'll like her, Cady."

Not that Cady would ever admit it out loud, but she had also had some concerns about leaving the castle and her best friend behind in Solraya and coming to live with the man that she had fallen in love with several days ago. What if she could not get Laeghton off alcohol? What if she could not help free him from his demons? She had not been that concerned about it on her way here especially with the news that Wren Rae was back. She was a big reason that Laeghton behaved the ways that he did before Cady had ever entered the picture. She had sacrificed her life and her world for this man and one question still remained...was it worth it? She would hope and pray for that answer to arrive to her soon because she would be humilated if something went wrong and she was dismissed from his services. She knew she could always go back to Queen Danielle, her beloved friend and King Joscelin, but she would go back with her head in between her legs. Laeghton had swept her off her feet the day that he had met her and he accepted her for who she was, both good and bad. He did not run or get angry when she told him of her past so maybe he really was worth it all.
She hoped that she was not being too naive, no one else knew of her plan and she would most nobles and people would disapprove of what she was doing, but if she was being truthful with herself, she did not care what people thought. She could not hide her feelings for him anymore and now they were in the comfort of his castle alone where no one else was around minus the servants and his beloved sister and Cady could not help, but shake all the thoughts that were running through her head and turn her attention back towards Laeghton who was holding her tightly in his arms and asking her about scandals.
She snorted very unladylike, pushing a piece of her hair behind her ear, "I grew up with scandals all around me, my Laeghton. I am quite accustomed to them, however, to answer your question, it depends on the seriousness of the scandal and if I am involved somehow. So tell me, do you like scandals? Yes you are chilvarous, even when you do not have to be, like now. You are being chivalrous in your own castle when you have the option of taking me upstairs, however, you have not yet." She commented back with a small smirk at the end of her statement and then glanced at him staring at her strangely.
"What I meant was that, where I come from, most loyals who lose siblings or spouses, are not as kind as you. I know the right thing would be letting your long lost sibling or whomever stay with you, but some men don't. Mostly nobles in fear of doing damage to their reputation, that is all I'm saying. I'm complimenting you on being so kind, I love that about you, your kindness when you do not have to be. You are the bravest, kindest, most compassionate and intelligent man I have ever met and I have met lots of men. I am fortunate that you asked me for my friendship and guidance when you did not have to. You also gave me a chance to grow as a person and I will forever be grateful for that." She said softly giving him a weak smile before biting down on her lip gently in nervousness before staring at the floor a bit embarrassed.

As each minute passed, Avonderre was beginning to feel more like home. Everything he'd spent so long without was here now, and Laeghton could feel the blood that used to run so coldly through his veins warming to the presence of two angels, one innocent and the other estranged. Wren Rae was still having trouble adjusting to a new life after five years of a bad one, and though Laeghton did not know the specifics, he knew enough to be able to say that she needed more time to heal with the Lord before he could intervene and begin to help her himself.
He turned his attention back to Cady. She was so young, so innocent. Laeghton felt warmer and younger in her presence, as though he were still the poor childish boy he'd been ten years ago, back in his twenties. Since then, he'd lost his celibacy to a woman he hated, lost his sister to a place he hated, and lost his faith to a God he had come close to hating. But all was back that could be recovered now, and it was rather time he started looking ahead instead of looking back.
"How about," he said thoughtfully, "A different kind of scandal? The kind that only you and I need care about; the kind where society has no say in what I do." He grinned and stole a quick kiss. He then smiled at her, looking down at her and knowing that he wanted her here. "I hope to be so. God would want that, I do think. And Wrennie's a good woman. I know it." With another quick thought, Laeghton added, "I hope you'll stay here and learn even more." He hugged her closer and then released her. Already, things were beginning to look up.

Every second that she spent in Avonderre Castle and in Laeghton's arms, the more Cady realized that this would be her new residence if Laeghton allowed her to be in his life like she wanted him to be. His smell and touch were intoxicating to her and she could not help, but let him fill her brain and her heart. Laeghton after a few days short of meeting him had captured her heart and soul and she was still in a bit of a shock that someone actually wanted to love her and wanted to be with her like he did. He was an amazing man and she wanted nothing more in the world than to be with him.
She slowly raised an eyebrow at him regarding him mentioning their own personal scandals and she could not help, but smirk when she realized what exactly he had meant.
"And what kind of scandal are you speaking of my lord? Surely not a mischievous kind of scandal." She asked him curiously with a smirk leaning up to kiss him gently once more on the lips before he kissed her gently once more. She loved it when he kissed her, he was a gentle kisser, not at all rough with her or anything and she appreciated that.
She gave him a sweet, loving smile and a simple kiss on the nose before feeling him release her from his grip, but that didn't keep her from releasing hers. She kept her arms around him and rested her head against his chest holding him tightly not wanting to let go anytime soon.
"I know you are there is no doubt in my mind and I know Wren Rae feels the same. I'm sure she's a wonderful woman. I look forward to meeting her one day whenever the time is right. I will stay for as long as you wish for me to stay my dear." She replied to him with a sweet smile.

Laeghton couldn't help but wonder why God had brought, of all people, Cady into his life before he brought Wrennie. Laeghton wasn't supposed to fall in love. He was not that sentimental a man, and love was supposed to be a trust, was it not? This woman, thirteen years his junior, was the object of his desire, and yet it did not seem quite right. It only seemed right when he was with her. Was that it? Was that how it should have felt? He wouldn't know. He'd never been in love. His first wife, who had been a year his senior, had been "gifted" to him, and the marriage arranged accordingly. She'd been a high noble, a widow herself, when they'd married.
He got a dowry but no love of it, and all the while he'd wanted to be rid of her. Divorces were difficult and uncommon, and a disgrace was hanging always over his head for sending her away; everyone would look down on a second marriage.
Hell, but it felt nice to be here with Cady. She was like a fresh breeze in the stale old castle. He couldn't honestly say he was courting her yet, not without the consent of the King and Queen, but he could say at least that he adored her. Her youthful innocence, her compassion for others--he just wanted to protect her from all the evils of the world and all she had yet to learn. This sweet virginal girl was underexposed. "I think..." he started, frowning at what he'd proposed already, "that perhaps... we should... be married." The words crossed his lips before he could think on what he'd said. Really, it had been his conscience covering up for a mistake on part of his body, which he rarely used to think. But he hadn't quite meant what he said.
"I--I mean, perhaps one day. After you've decided if you could put up with an old man like myself." The lust that he was trying to cover up had backed him into a corner. Originally, he was going to suggest she come to his chamber, join him for the evening, but realizing how naive she was had make him think otherwise. Now he was faced with something else entirely. And she clung to him like he was her lifeline--he was, after all, a caretaker by nature--and he was hopelessly sunken. Maybe he did love her. Was this what love was?
He was more than glad to avert the coversation. "I've no reputation to keep, Cady, and even if I did, I have to take care of her. Divorce does wonders for society's prying eyes. But I hope you'll stay awhile. You and she would get one well, I think. But she's delicate now. I even doubt my efficiency with her."

Cady wasn’t someone special. She was an ordinary, plain peasant who had been running away from her former life as a royal. She wasn’t sure what was so special about her yet Laeghton had invited her into his home and had expressed to her that he had no intention of dismissing her from his services. All she knew was that she was there to help him recover from his alcoholism and depression. As much as she loved him and was for sure of it, she knew it would only be a matter of time before Laeghton found someone younger and prettier to spend his time with. Men were pigs like that sometimes yet something inside was reassuring her that Laeghton wasn’t like most men, at least most noblemen. His situation was peculiar she was certain of it.
Now here she was tangled in the man’s arms and she watched his facial expression as it seemed like he was thinking about something. Cady raised an eyebrow slowly as she realized that he was deeply in thought. When the scandals question was brought back towards her attention, she wondered what exactly was going through his mind. He frowned a bit before announcing that he announced that he wishes to be married. What?? A million thoughts were running through Cady’s mind and she felt herself numb from the shock. She never thought that Laeghton would be interested in remarrying once more let alone for her.
Slowly she stepped out of his embrace and blushed, “I…I…I do not know. I ran away from all of that chaos back in Tyrian my lord. I arrived in Solraya to escape from the expectations of marriage under a tyrant ruler. I have the respect and trust of both the King and Queen and they have let me live at their castle and have let me stay here. I trust that you have not lied to me about your intentions my lord.” She replied raising both eyebrows at him as it hit her.
Could it really be true? Could Laeghton really have only brought her to here to make her his second wife? Rumors would spread around like fireflies and she could be found out by her father and everyone back home in Tyrian. What if he had been lying about everything? A million thoughts were running through her mind and she hated the idea that she was here being sold to the highest bidder once again.
“Forgive me, however I must protest if the only reason why you invited me here was to marry me. Although maybe one day that would be fine, it is not the proper time. You have never mentioned marriage to me before. Why all of a sudden that comes to your attention? I want to fall in love with someone who loves me back and respects me. If I die alone because I want it, then so be it. Forgive me my Lord Mercer, but I cannot stay here if that is all you desire of me. I already know I would very much enjoy the company of your sister and until that day arises I will keep my distance.” She replied trying to hide her anger as she curtseyed in front of him before turning on her high heel and heading out of the foyer and outside where she was familiar with it. She had never been anywhere inside the castle and could remember her way around since Laeghton had led her around it the last time we had met.
Fighting back tears, Cady wiped her eyes as she slumped down on a bench very ladylike and hide her face shielding it from the cruel world. Maybe she should have never come and now Laeghton probably wanted her to leave. She knew she could always go back to Queen Danielle’s services, but she’d also lose the man that she loved and just snapped at for no reason. For now she needed some think to that, it was obvious that Laeghton was hiding, but why the marriage subject? It was a touchy subject for both of them. Sitting on the bench in the middle of the Lord of Avonderre’s gardens, Lady Cadence Black began sobbing for the first time since her arrival to Solraya.
***
Cady found herself wondering around her old castle back in Tyrian. She walked into the throne room where her father awaited her arrival. He did not smile. He did not welcome her back with open arms. Instead of anything, he dragged her out of his castle and to the Tower to die. She sobbed for forgiveness from him, from Laeghton, from anyone. Demons and people screaming at her surrounded her as she was hit with rotten fruit and stale bread from every which way. Angry words and accusations of being called a whore and a witch filled her head as she struggled against the guards that were holding her tightly to him.
She soon was thrown in a jail cell and she began screaming pounding on the door demanding to be released wondering if it was pointless or not. Cady slumped down against the stone wall that caused immediate pain to her back and she winced tugging on the chains that were bidding her wrists together. They tightened them on purpose to make them hurt worse and she growled in anger before the cell door opened.
“Your Highness, you have a visitor.” One jail guard sneered before a dark, tall man entered the cell with such a stance that Cady could recognize him from anywhere. Lord John Thornton the man she had been betrothed to before she had run away. He smirked at her shaking his head before grabbing her face in his hand and slapping her face hard. Gasping from the shock and pain, she kicked him hard before rubbing her cheek. The muffled screams and curses coming from him flooded her mind as he began punching and kicking her as hard as he could. His sharp heel plunging through her dress and into her skin drawing blood.
“I’ll teach you a lesson you whore.” Thornton growled at her as he tore her dress open right down the front and she gasped.
“No please don’t. Please…” She trailed off before being punched in the mouth and she began screaming, pleading and crying for any kind of assistance as she felt his greasy, slimy hands running up and down her bare skin. Biting down on her lip, Cady felt the tears running down her face the saltiness of her tears mixing with her freshly open cuts made them sting harshly against her skin. She tried hard to fight back and scream, but it was no use. She was nothing now. No one would care about her now. She let out one last piercing loud scream before she felt herself losing consciousness.

Post by Lord Laeghton Mercer on Jul 11, 2012 10:40:37 GMT -6
It hadn't taken long for Laeghton to figure out that he had messed up in what he had said. Rather than speaking his mind, he had tried to cover up his thoughts, and now it appeared he had only made things worse. This was all too common in his life, it seemed. He made everything worse, despite honest best intentions. He'd lost Wren Rae. He'd silenced his marriage. He'd twice attempted suicide--failed attempts that he would never tell anyone about--and he felt like one of the most awful people to walk the planet. His constant alcohol problem didn't help either.
He let go of her remorsefully, knowing she didn't care a bit for what he had asked her. And his coverup hadn't been a whole lot better, either. He sighed with a frustrated frown on his face.
She was angry, or scared, or something. He hadn't done right by her, and he knew it. He listened to her and he wanted to put up some sort of fight, but his throat was dry and no words were coming up. This time, there would be no response. He watched her with a desperation in his eyes that wouldn't go away, and every time he tried to call words to his lips, they got stuck behind his tongue. A tear formed in one of his eyes and he wished he could say the words that kept sticking in his throat, but he couldn't. As she left him, angry and something else, he stood stark still, not knowing what to do or what had just happened.
Did he really love her? He was pretty sure he did.
It was later that night, as Laeghton was just about to lay down for sleep. He had spent the remainder of his afternoon in his kitchen, drinking tea (with the slightest infusion of opium--yes, he knew how bad that was) and then checking up on Wren Rae, to make sure she was comfortable in her new lodgings and to read her a few more Bible verses. He was determined to heal her one way or another, and to be honest, the time he spent with her kept his mind off of all the things that had already gone wrong today.
He reached over to his nightstand to down what was left in his whiskey bottle, and then sighed. Drinking was all he had when his heart hurt. Drinking and opium. They didn't ever seem to dull the pain enough, though, and it always continued to hurt him to remember what had happened to him in the past five years. A lost sister, father, and wife--and now a ruined relationship.
Dammit. That was all he could think.
But all of the sudden, Laeghton heard something down the hall--a scream. He sat up, his reflexes not so good as they were when he was sober, and listened. It wasn't coming from the room next to him, where Wren Rae was, but somewhere farther down the hall in the other direction. After all, this wasn't really his room, but just the one he was using while he was still worried about Wrennie. His real room was at the top of one of the castle's towers. Of course, with the excessive rooms here and no court, there were loads of empty chambers. He got up out of bed, left the room, and went to find the sound. Down the hallway he half-ran until stumbling upon the right room.
When he went in, there was Cady, screaming for God knew why. But she wasn't awake--she was having some horrible dream or something. He went to the bed, not thinking, and picked her up into his arms. "Shhh," he whispered, stroking her hair and trying to calm her. What to do?
He carried her out of the room, not wanting to leave her there alone with whatever awful dream she'd been having. Something was clearly wrong. He was, after all, a caretaker by nature, just not to himsef--that was what his addictions were for, they took care of him. He took her in his arms down the dark corridor, no light to guide him except the moon through a couple windows. Eventually he made it to his current room, where he laid her down gently on the bed. She may not like it, but he was going to lay down beside her until morning.
He watched her for an hour or so, making sure she was okay, before trying to get the last drops of whiskey out of the bottle and falling asleep beside her. He was only awoken by a strange sound.

Knowing it was pointless to even fight back anymore, Cady let herself succumb to her awful fate placed on the prick that was doing this to her. Biting down on her lip gently as her dress was ripped to shreds as Thornton continued to have his way with her, Cady’s cries were muffled by the hits and punches she was receiving and she just wished she was died already.
She gasped in shock as her horrible dream was interrupted by a sudden movement. Her eyes went wide opening in shock as she was picked up suddenly and placed into a warm set of arms. Glancing up, she recognized Laeghton staring down at her shushing her gently before carrying her out of her room and down the dark moonlit corridor. She wanted to protest, but the warmth and gentleness coming from him made her instantly settle down and she snuggled into his chest. It smelled of liquor and…odium? She watched him stumble around a bit without any service and light and she knew he was under the influence. Probably because of her getting angry at him as well, she grumbled to herself sleepily sighing.
“Laeghton please put me down before you drop me.” She told him sleepily but was ignored as he walked into his bedroom chamber and placed gently on his bed. She went to go back towards her bedroom, but was held back as a series of yawns escaped through her mouth. Deciding not to argue with him right now, Cady yawned and snuggled against his pillow while she took Laeghton’s hand in hers holding it tightly wanting him to be close to her.
“I’m sorry Laeghton, I do want to marry you, just now is not the right time.” She whispered softly wondering if he could hear her, but ignoring it as she closed her eyes and fell back asleep immediately.
**
Three hours later Cady woke up startled by another bad dream. Gasping in shock, she glanced around and saw that she was still in Laeghton’s bed only that she was curled in his arms wrapped up tightly to him. Their arms were wrapped around one another and she slowly untangled herself from his warm, smoky embrace. The morning after drinking wouldn’t be pretty for Laeghton and she sighed at the empty brandy bottle on his nightstand. Getting an idea she smirked and leaned over and kissed his stubbly cheek before getting up and grabbing the empty bottles. Cady grabbed the smoking pipe and the pack of odium before heading back down the corridor quietly.
She headed into the kitchen quietly as she threw out the bottles and the pipe. Good riddance, she thought to herself, as she swung the cabinets open as quietly as she could trying to find the rest of the alcohol. Laeghton was the Lord of Avonderre, he could afford any kind of wine or liquor that he wanted. She found one that was locked and she had a gut feeling it was all in there. Grabbing a hair pin from her hair, Cady quickly pulled it apart and worked it up and down the latch before it came unlocked. She smirked in satisfaction as it opened and she immediately grabbed the remainder of the bottles and pouring them down the drain. She was here to help Laeghton dissolve his drinking and depression, and if that meant getting rid of it all, then she would. She could handle him being mad at her.
When she was done, she grabbed the empty bottles and rushed outside to dump them in the garbage. Rushing back inside, she grabbed a goblet and poured some milk inside of it to make it look like she had come down for something to drink. She washed her hands in the basin when she was done and dried them on her nightgown before closing the wine cabinet doors and heading back up the stairs.
“Lady Cadence, is everything alright?” A servant asked her gently as Cady stopped sharply at the top of the stairs.
“Oh fine sir thank you, I just wanted some milk to help me sleep. Go back to sleep please, I’ll be alright.” She told him softly and the butler nodded before headed back downstairs to his bedroom. She quickly headed back down the hallway towards Laeghton’s room hoping that he’d still be sleeping. Not feeling any ounce of remorse of what she had done, she placed the glass of milk and took a drink of it to make it look like she had drank some and wiped her mouth sliding back into the bed next to the handsome man that she was in love with. She hoped that he hadn’t woken up at anytime and she pulled the blankets over her once more settling down trying to go back to sleep.
