The sun had just peeked over the horizon and Darsidian stumbled into his home, clutching at his head. He was safe now, within his own walls. He knew that if someone entered here, they would knock first. This would allow him to pull himself together before answering the door.
He moved to the table where so much of his work was laid out and sunk down into the chair. He didn't think he would have the energy to make it to the stairs, let alone up them. He let his head roll back and rest against the back of the chair. He knew he had spent way too long outside last night. He barely remembered what he had done, and he had only just been able to stop the beast from killing a child.
Normally, he didn't stand in the way of the beast, choosing to coexist rather than fight it. The beast had saved his life on more than one occasion when he was a small boy still trying to live with the fact that he had committed horrible deeds. The beast had kept him sheltered and fed at night when he was too young to take care of himself properly in the daytime. The beast had been repaid for his help by being kept locked away during Darsidian's apprenticeship.
Now Darsidian and the beast were more like neighbors in the same body. Darsidian got through what he needed in the day, and the beast took over at night. Darsidian couldn't say that he was thrilled with the arrangement. However, he also knew that he didn't exactly have a choice. Were it not for the beast and the forest god that his family worshiped, he would have been dead so long ago.
Now he lived alone. This way the beast could have its effect on him without too much danger of the people that he saw on a daily basis finding out what happened to him. He could explain away the headaches and the sleeping until all hours of the morning to working all night. It was the best way to handle his life, even if it meant that he was nearly always alone.
