Ben Barnes
NAME: Judicaël Fleet Launcelyn
TITLE: Sir Launcelyn of Solraya
AFFILIATION: Solraya
AGE: twenty-nine
OCCUPATION:Knight; guardian and protector
LIKES:
+ The Royal court in the kingdom of Solraya and his duties to the King.
+ Women. Of all sorts. Judicaël is a devonaire womanizer and enjoys his time in court for all the women he is around.
+ Chivalry and the game of court. It's amusing to play the part of the sauveur knight, what with all the damsels all in distress.
+ The little pleasures of food and drink, for not all are lucky enough to have these, this he knows.
+ The hunt, for what is better than to be the best at the hunt?
+ Glory, sweet, sweet glory.
+ A good book. One can never be too crude to enjoy a book and a quiet study.
DISLIKES:
- The near-mandatory marriage prospects he will soon have to consider, seeing as he is still a bachelor.
- Anyone that is rude or unchivalrous. If Judicaël can play the game, so can everyone else.
- Women who do not fear their knights. They are not war-trained, are they? So why can they not respect those who are greater than they?
- Fear. If any man on the battlefield should flee, Judicaël would lose all respect for the man.
- Being interruped in the course of a good book. Nothing is worse.
QUIRKS/HABITS:
~ Judicaël is extremely self-indulgent and incredibly naive. He does not care too much about everyone else, but since he is well learned in the acting game of the court, he can, at times, appear to be a fine, well-bred gentleman. This quality often leads him to indulge in women and gambling, and he thinks highly of himself both as a man and a knight.
~ Additionally, Judicaël is rather a fan of gory games, such as bull-baiting, cockfighting, and jousting. He claims to be the greatest jouster (besides the king, of course).
~ But Judicaël has a soft spot, though he considers it a weakness. He's sworn that the woman who figures it out will be his bride (which would obviously be a reward...) and his true love. That is, he is weak to the charms of a well-versed woman in singing. The problem seems to linger that no woman ever stays in his sights long enough to try it.
FEARS:
` That he will never marry. His fear resides more in that he may never find a woman that will please him, and that his honour wouldn't allow him to have affairs once he was married. It comes down, naturally, to self-indulgence.
` That he will be killed in a joust and lose all pride and honour.
` That he will be found out and punished for the court-game he plays, even though it is irrational, as everyone seems to play it.
TOXIC SECRET: Judicaël has been married before. He secretly married a gypsy girl when he was eighteen, and accidentally drowned her.
FATHER: Sir Miles Launcelyn, deceased in a fire
MOTHER: Saoirse Fleet Laucelyn, also deceased in fire
OTHERS: twin brother, Nathanaël Launcelyn, whose location and status is currently unknown.
HISTORY: Judicaël and his twin Nathanaël were born to Miles and Saoirse Launcelyn, two people who never should have been married. Miles was an ill-tempered knight who prided in killing, while Saoirse was a town beauty who was born poor and never spoke. Unbeknownst to most (though not uncommon), Miles beat his wife brutally when she did something or said something that even slightly offended him, and he once threw her down a flight of stairs, breaking her leg. These injuries often caused her to miscarry.
Judicaël and his brother grew up thinking it was simply the way things were. But when the brothers were fifteen, and well on their way to being self-sufficient men, a great fire happened on the estate of the Launcelyns, and while the twins escaped barely burned, their parents were trapped in the top room, in the middle of an argument. Judicaël never saw them alive again.
He and his brother made their own way to a new kingdom, the kingdom of Solraya, where they found haven in the lands outside the court. For three years, they lived in the woods on the outskirts of the kingdom, afraid to be found by the king and killed.
It just so happened that one day, a band of gypsies passing through saw the boys. Judicaël, for the first time stricken by the feeling of lust, was overthrown by his feelings for a girl named Constantia. He begged her not to leave with her gypsy family and instead to marry him, and after a day, she consented. After a gypsy marriage, Judicaël and his 'wife' spent three days hiding in the woods, making love and playing games. When they arrived back at the camp, both the gypsies and Nathanaël had disappeared.
But Judicaël and Constantia made their living as he had for three years, living on the outskirts and additionally engaging in lustful romantics. It was two months into this that Constantia fell into the pond in the middle of a raging thundestorm. She'd left to relieve herself, and when she didn't return after fifteen minutes, Judicaël went to find her. However, to poor girl was drowned and dead.
Judicaël picked up his pride, told himself he'd never really loved her nor been married, and went into the kingdom, presenting himself as the son of a valiant knight. He soon earned his own place at court and was knighted himself. Now he stands, ten years after the death of his lover, to be married again soon, and he fears that the court-games he's learned to play will only cause him more grief.
RP SAMPLE: Sinead needed some time away from home, away from her troubles, away from the people that she loved so much she couldn't stand it. She was too much of a homebody, and needed to be out more, but with her mother to take care of and her brothers, Flannery and Finnigan, to worry about, Sinead had no time to look for a husband, simple as that. She overworked herself and was too dedicated to the lives of her family to be overly concerned with her own future.
The problem was, she needed to marry so she could help support her family. She needed money. Her mother was stable for a few more months, but Sinead was always worried in the back of her mind about after that. What if it was because of her that her family ended up starving? (Well, no, that wouldn't happen, not with Flannrey and Finnigan around). And though the Beckingtons were by no means poor, they were also working-class, normal people. They had to survive.
It sometimes seemed like everyone counted on Sinead marrying up, even. Certainly, that was not easy to do in a society like was here in Charleston.
Sinead now found herself at the docks in the harbour, perhaps looking for Flannery, but likely looking for something to do. She really just needed some time to be somewhere besides her poor little house with her poor little mother. And despite the doubts she hadof finding a rich man to marry, Sinead was wearing her best clothes, the ones Finnigan had bought her when he'd gone to England last year. He was a generous brother, to be sure, and sometimes Sinead envied he and his twin Flannery, for they were men who got to travel and work. If only she could make money as they did, her family would be fine.
Watching the ships come in, Sinead felt a little bit at peace. She wanted to be free of her burdens at home, but she loved her family so dearly. She could never leave them, even though she had a quick temper and hollow threats when she was angered. She laughed a little bit to herself and wondered if she should consider returning home now.
She almost wanted to never go back.
