NAME: Laeghton Gale Mercer
TITLE: Lord of Avonderre
AFFILIATION: avonderre
AGE: thirty-one
OCCUPATION: lord, hobbyist interpreter
LIKES:reading for all books contain knowledge, the source of all power.
writing for one must write his own history, if it is to be told in his persepctive.
language as a hobby, really, but he speaks many tongues.
honor because nothing is quite as crucial to one's reputation.
combat for it proves one's strength- and therefore worth.
tradition because what works should never be taken out of practice.
drinking but only on occasion. A little alcohol never did too much damage.
power which is the object of all objectivity and the goal of life.
DISLIKES:gaudy things because they're completely unnecessary, and he never wears them.
tyrian for they send a constant threat and seem ever-present in his garden.
courtly love which is a joke, and he has his own mini-court anyhow (he should know).
ignorance and the disintegration of knowledge that accompanies it.
crass behavior for everyone ought respect their superiors.
big dresses which honestly get in the way during dances.
QUIRKS/HABITS:
-tendency to steer away from court balls and avoid hosting any himself. his court is very well mannered, and not lavacious like the one in solraya.
-alcohol addiction, present in many situations. But somehow, he manages to stay sober most of the time and has a very intelligent mind even through intoxication.
-taking long rides around his estate to see how it functions, which honestly still amazes him.
FEARS:
-an attack by tyrian, whose numbers he cannot calculate and whose leader he fear underestimating.
-an attack by solraya, if they ever wanted to claim avonderre back for their own court.
-a disrespectful wife. he's already divorced one, and doesn't want much to put up with a second.
TOXIC SECRET: Laeghton is deaf in his left ear and going blind in his left eye (not a secret), but suffering a guilty conscience from attempting two suicides and a murder after his best friend disappeared.
FATHER: Gale Mercer
MOTHER: Antigone Glennon Mercer
OTHERS:
Reutch Mercer, brother, 23.
Caurier Mercer, brother, 19.
Ghymian Mercer, brother, 16.
Wren Rae Mercer, sister, 25 (last seen at 20).
HISTORY: Laeghton grew up in the court at Solraya, with his father a knight and his mother a lady-in-waiting. He was luckily the first of five children, the last of which was his only sister. Laeghton was well educated in France, to where he was sent at the age of eight, and by the time he'd returned to court, he spoke several languages fluently and was more intelligent in both facts and humanity. He had learned court games, and though he despised them, knew how to use them.
Some of his skills proved to be of great assistance in gaining a good standing in the court. He became a well-trusted man, and was finally granted the title Lord of Avonderre at twenty-four. He moved happily to his new home, though sad to leave his siblings behind him, and took up reading and learning how to run a manor.
Wren Rae visited her brother often, and the two became close friends, writing letters to eachother and discussing human nature. Unfortunatey, one day Laeghton learned that his sister had fled court and no one knew where she'd gone to. They assumed, after her one month absence, that she would not return, and that she'd likely been killed on her own.
Laeghton went to search for her, but ten months turned up no evidence. He could only assume she had made it to another kingdom or somewhere. The biggest problem was, she seemed to have no reason to leave. Was she kidnapped? Killed?
After she'd been gone for two and a half years, Laeghton, now half blind and half deaf (but not hiding that, for it was no secret), recieved news from his mother that his father had committed suicide after hearing tell of a dead body found in a creek in the forest. It was of a young girl, likely Wren Rae, but there was no proof one way or another. His father had simply thought the worst.
This made Laeghton distraught. He raged for days, and tried to kill his wife (the one he later divorced for her disdainful manners) without success. She never said anything, and he didn't take any dints in his reputation. He did, however, move into a state of depression, divorced his wife, and spent many of his days alone. And one day, it got to him. He couldn't bear to live without Wren Rae, his best friend and confidante, as well as intellectual equal, and couldn't go on. He tried once to hang himself, but as he hung choking, the rope broke. Once more, he tried to end his life with poison, but miscalculated the amount needed to die. A day after these affairs, Laeghton took up drinking instead.
He's drinken ever since, and since he has no children, needs another wife.
