HISTORY:
Wren Rae had a very happy childhood. She grew up in the court life of Solraya with her father, her mother, and her four brothers. She didn’t know much of her elder brother Laeghton until he returned from France. She was very little when he left for France, barely two years of age. But when he returned, she began to form a very close bond with him. They would talk for ages about philosophy and human nature. Those hours were some of the happiest hours that she spent in her teen years. That, and the time that she spent singing. She loved music and singing was her favorite form of music.
Even when her brother was sent away to become the Lord of Avonderre, she made it her business to visit him often. When she didn’t visit him, she made certain that she would send long letters on anything and everything, feeling very loved and wanted when her brother would reply. Though she knew she was loved by her family, it was Laeghton that she felt closest to, and she didn’t want to face his rejection for her views. But he never rejected her, instead nurturing the thoughts that she had and embracing the knowledge that she possessed.
At 20, she was betrothed to one of the lords in the court of Sol. She fancied him very much and she was so excited to be married to him. He truly courted her and won her affections. She had no qualms about marrying such a man and she knew that she would be happy as his wife and as a lady of the court. As much as her brother hated court life, Wren Rae had taken to it like a fish to water. She looked forward to the day when she would be married, and more, she looked forward to the day when she herself might be raising a little lord. More than anything, Wren Rae wanted a child of her own.
It was this very desire that led her to go out in the dark of night one very clear night. It was merely weeks before her wedding and she wanted so much to be able to please her new husband. She was going out to the apothecary to get some herbs. The apothecary would know what kind of herbs would increase the chances of her getting with child quickly. So she grabbed a bag and set off to the apothecary, feeling absolutely overjoyed.
This peace was broken however, when she, on her way to the town, happened on a camp of Tyrian men. Before she could run back to the safety of her home, she was caught by one of the men, and she was terrified by all of these men in Tyrian armor. The captain saw her beauty and decided that he wanted her for his wife. Wren Rae wanted to refuse him, but it was marriage or death. She knew that her family would be heartbroken if she were to be killed over something so senseless, and with a heavy heart she accepted the marriage proposal.
She was taken to Tyrian and became a lady of the court, living with the husband she had been forced to marry for several years. He was both physically and verbally abusive to her. The spark of life and fire that she had was slowly being put out. He didn’t allow her to read books on philosophy. When she wrote to her brother and her family, he offered to take the letters to post for her and then burned them when she wasn’t around. For years, she believed that her family, knowing she was in trouble and knowing she wanted help, had abandoned her because she never received any replies from her family.
Her husband cultivated that idea, and Wren Rae continued to take the abuse from her husband until her eyes developed a haunted look that she could never quite hide. After years of the abuse and the loneliness and the suffering that she had been forced to suffer, she finally couldn’t take it anymore. It was a dark night that her husband made a move to force himself on her after she refused. She grabbed for the nearest object and struck him a blow with a candlestick as he tried to get her to give up. The blow knocked her husband unconscious, and a stray edge had given him a cut on his forehead. She saw the blood and saw that he wasn’t moving and began to fear for her very life. She believed that she had killed her husband. If she stayed then she could be killed for the murder of her husband.
With that thought driving her, she dressed in one of the gowns she could get on herself and went to the stables. She took her husband’s prized stallion, known for his speed and power, and rode faster than she thought was possible to flee the borders of Tyrian. Once she was inside the borders of Solraya, she knew she had to make a decision on where to go. She knew that she couldn’t go to her brother’s lands. If he hadn’t helped her in her time with her husband, why would he help her now, when she was in more trouble than she could handle? She hated him for abandoning her when she needed him most, and instead, fled to the town of Sol, hoping that she might find some welcome and sanctuary there.
