Vivian Leigh
NAME: Maeva Cicely Rosamund
TITLE: Lady Maeva of Rosamund Manor
AFFILIATION: Solraya and Tyrian (see history)
AGE: 19
OCCUPATION: Healer by nature, swordsman by necessity, lady by trade
LIKES:
- Singing – Maeva sings of her own volition when she is happy. She loves to sing and her father encouraged her to keep it up as a ladylike art when she was returned to him.
- The sound of a harp playing – Maeva’s favorite musical instrument to hear is the harp. She finds it absolutely enchanting
- Birds – she shares a kindred spirit with birds, especially caged ones. She loves to watch them in flight.
- Swords – something her father could never get out of her was her love for swords. When she was with her mother, she learned how to use blades made for her size and she could never give that up, even though her father disapproved heavily. It just meant she couldn’t get caught.
- Poetry – she has a soft spot in her heart for poetry, and the man who wins her heart will have to be able to give her poetry
- The nighttime – Maeva takes after her mother in this way. She loves being out at night with the stars and the moon and nighttime creatures.
- Sweet Fruits – She loves fruits that leave a sweet taste in the mouth. They were considered a treat when she was with her mother, so she cherishes them all the more.
DISLIKES:
- Corsets – she hates being corseted into anything. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t like wearing dresses, it just means that she hates the corsets that go along with some of them.
- Bullies – Her father and her half-brother are both bullies and she has grown up with an inbred hatred of bullies because of her life experiences with them.
- Being unable to help those in need – Maeva’s heart is very kind, despite everything that has happened to her. She is very mothering and she very much wants to be able to help those in need.
- Singing – This is on both lists because her father finds her voice her one redeeming quality. As such he forces her to perform for his company and the like. When she does not sing of her own volition, she can’t stand doing it.
- Silence – It makes her very uncomfortable when there is silence in a room. Maeva enjoys talking with companions, and doesn’t mind an easy silence, but when the silence stretches on too long she will say something just to break it.
- Hunting – Though she doesn’t mind fighting another human, she cannot see animals so recklessly slaughtered.
QUIRKS/HABITS:
- Maeva has trouble looking anyone in the eye on first meeting. Her father was very strict about being feminine and demure, so she has it ingrained in her head that she looks down when she meets someone. However, this trait disappears once you’ve gained her companionship.
- She bites her lip if she’s holding something back. Maeva’s mouth sometimes gets her into trouble with her father. She is very opinionated and outspoken, a trait she picked up from her mother. As such, sometimes she gets herself into situations where she’s either said the wrong thing or it just appears she’s said the wrong thing because of her father.
- When uncomfortable, Maeva will adjust her clothing. She has very poor body image because of her father, so her tendency is to fix her clothing if she is uncomfortable.
- Maeva is a hopeless romantic. Though she does have her tomboyish tendencies, she wants to be wooed and won. She wants to marry for love, not power as her father wishes.
FEARS:
- her father – Maeva doesn’t have a fear of men, just of her father. When he walks in the room she trembles.
- being confined or restrained – Maeva has a terrible fear of not being able to remove herself from a situation. This partially comes from her mother who was always in the open, and partially because her father would lock her away when he thought she misbehaved.
TOXIC SECRET: Her dual allegiances, tying her to both Tyrian and Solraya.
FATHER: Guarian Rosamund – 45 – alive
MOTHER: Mayarra – 39 - Alive
OTHERS: Several half siblings, none of which are acknowledged by her father. And if Maeva is going to stay with him (and she is whether she likes it or not), then she can’t acknowledge them either.
HISTORY: Maeva was an unexpected and frankly unwanted child on both accounts. The night of her conception was one fraught with turmoil. Mayarra, a gypsy dancer born and raised in Tyrian, was travelling with her caravan and had crossed the borders by simple unhappy chance. Minstrels care not for politics in the same way that other kinds of citizens do. While travelling during a time of heightened suspicion, they met up with a Solrayan patrol.
The head of this Solrayan patrol was Guarian, a less than chivalrous knight. Guarian was ambitious to a fault and cared enough to play by the rules in order to keep his head down, though he explored every loophole he could find in the rules. When they came upon the caravan, Guarian ordered the attack and much of the caravan was slaughtered. Guarian stayed the sword that would have killed Mayarra, but only to use her for his own pleasure.
Once Guarian had used her, he left her with the ruins of her caravan and thought nothing more of the encounter. Mayarra was not as lucky. She was left with a child growing in her womb that was not her husband’s. Guarian had killed her husband, the father of her two sons. Instead, she gave birth to a bastard daughter. She had been trying so hard with her husband for a daughter and now she hadn’t the heart to leave the bastard to die. She raised her as a member of the caravan.
Maeva got along well with her eldest half-brother. He taught her how to use blades to defend herself. Gypsy women had to know that. He taught her to be a little spitfire, teaching her to use her words to get what she wanted. She admired him very much. Her elder half-brother, on the other hand, blamed Maeva for the death of his father. He bullied her horribly, eventually making her believe that she was unwelcome because she was a murderer.
After she had gotten it through her head that she was responsible for the death of the man she had heard so many people pray for, she decided to run away. Maybe her father would believe that she wasn’t a bad girl, that she had done nothing to the man everyone loved so much. At the age of 11, she ran away from the caravan to find the father she had never met, arriving there in her gypsy clothes and her bare feet. He would have turned her out had he not noticed that she looked much like him. She introduced herself to him as Maeva and that she believed that he was her father.
Guarian then took her in, though his wife was unhappy with taking her in. Guarian had no other children and without a child, Guarian’s manor would fall to nothing and become the property of others. He began to systematically tear down everything her mother had taught her, forbidding her from continuing her sword practice and instead encouraging her to take up the arts of a lady, dancing and sewing and music. He also was very strict about what she wore and what she ate because he wanted her to be perfect so he might have a chance at marrying her higher than her station.
Maeva, now trapped under her father’s thumb, was unable to return to the life of a gypsy, and she sometimes dreams of returning to it.
